Elements of the story revealed:
Straight away you can tell it it is a religious based film as one of the opening scenes is of people walking in to a church with the sound of church bells ringing. There is also a close up of a gargoyle which infers its scary. After that their is quick editing and you can see a medium shot of a "creature". The voice over talks about the bible and god, which also confirms it is a religious based film. They also talk about demands which lets us understand why there was a medium shot of a creature. Most of the people filmed are shouting and running which indicates they must be scared and running from something. Also the text used it almost med evil font which can also impact what we expect the film to be like. The music indicated darkness, fear and realism.
Characters that appear in the trailers are:
Religious believers
A young scared looking girl
A man interested by the legend which seems to be the main character
Priest
A monster
A possessed women
Iconic elements of the genre
Iconic elements of this trailer for the genre horror is that all the music is dark. Monsters and possessed looking people are shown. Screams and running throughout the trailer, talk about a certain thing in a scary way, fire is used all the way through which creates fear and danger.
Costume and makeup visible
Make up on "creature" is visible in one of the opening scenes. There aren't really alot of different costumes and makeup, its seems to be a story based on normal people and the fear of a demand. So most of the people are just wearing day to day clothes to create a realistic view. The is a priest so obviously he is dressed in the appropriate clothes but other than that the only make up visible is on the demand you see twice.
Decor
The only decor which really contributes to the trailer is the shots of the church and also the gargoyles.
Props
Book on demands, a gun, bible.
Locations used
A church, a maze, outside in rain in a rocky area, a hotel, a bathroom, a hospital
Music used in the trailer
The music is varies through out the trailer, at the beginning it seems as if a quire are singing then violins are played in a what seems deep deathly way, through that there is the sound of bells ringing. 25 seconds in their are drums beating faslty with a "dark" voice. Half way through the trailer you hear all of this but with drums and it becomes a beat, where intense scenes the music speeds up but when its transitions between shots its quiet and gets louder to build up tension.
Dialogue
Dialogue is used right from the beginning it is slow and said in deep voice and sound scary and serious so straight away you can tell its not a happy or funny film. "innocence blood will spill" this also indicates the film is gory, scary and dark. They also speak the bible alot so you can tell it is a religious film. "if something is trying to get your attention its not holy" this starts to indicate what the film is focused on. Further on its say " i believe in God which that brings belief of the devil" this kind of certifies that the film is about a devil/demand. The trailer then finished with "they are here". The dialogue they use is effective, because its not used alot but is when is used lets of useful hints of what the film is based on. Also the last line of dialogue used sends shivers down your spine and make you aware the film is about the unknown. Silence is not used at all in the way of you cant hear anything. However alot of the trailer is mostly music and not dialogue which leaves you to work out what the film is about.
Camera shots and there effects
Behind the shoulder shot of women walking on dark gloomy abandoned looking town.
Low angle shot of people walking in to a church, this makes the church look scary and powerful.
Medium shot of a gargoyle. From this shot you can tell the film is something to do with the church as everything so far signifies this.
Close up of "monster" screaming. This shows us what the film is based around and it created fear and surprise as its the first jumpy scene shown in the trailer.
Long shot of gargoyle with fire. This shot infer danger as the fire looks fierce.
Close up on a book. Helps up to see that the film is based on myths as you he is reading the book which also looks old.
Medium shot of man talking. Its dark and you cant really see him, so once again it creates fear but also awareness of the unknown.
Medium shot of a "something" raising their hand, this begins us to see what the "unknown" actually is.
Low angle of church again. Reinforces the churches power.
Medium shot of young girl in a maze. Indicate the girl is in danger on her own.
Medium shot, farmer holding gun.
Long shot of fire close to the camera then what looks like a mother and daughter holding hands with a demand behind them, this really creates tension and fear of the demand also the power of the demand as it is much bigger then the two humans.
Medium shot of the man looking at something then falling to the floor. More interest in why that is happening.
Medium shot of what seems to be the main character looking deep in thought.
Medium shot of main character kneeling near his bathroom sink.
Medium shot of him then falling back and pulling on his bath curtain. This infers your not even safe in your own house and once again creates fear of the unknown.
Two shot of a priest and main character talking. Contrast between someone who knows about these demands and someone who is intrigued in who and what they are.
Long shot of scary looking gargoyle. Again reminding us of the churches power the what the gargoyles symbolise.
Medium shot or main character in dark area. Creates fear again as it is dark and you can really see him.
Medium shot of priest. I think they used this shot so you can see he is a priest holding a bible and that is why he knows about the demands.
Close up of a book. Shows the interest in these creatures and that they "do exist" creates fear of the unknown.
Close up of what i think must be the demand, lets you see what they keep speaking about looks like, it scares you but awares you of what they have been talking about all through the trailer.
Close up of possessed looking women. Maybe she has been effected by the demand, it leaves us on a cliff hanger.
Medium shot of light shade falling to the floor, Indicates the power the demands have.
Close of up of man looking at something screaming awares us the characters at some point to see the demands and wants us to see what the demand actually do and why they are feared so much.
Medium shot of old man with his finger of his mouth indicating people to be quiet as the demands are there.
Medium shots are used quite alot i think this is so you can see who and what the person is but also see the background so you can tell that its not a happy story and that its dark and gloomy.
Also they use low angles shot time to time of the church to show the power it has.
Editing
The editing at the beginning is fast editing changing from scene to scene quickly.
Codes and Conventions
This film is a religious film in hope to invoke our hidden worst fears and also frighten or panic you. Its purpose is to make you fear death and the unknown also to cause nightmares. The characteristics are that the unknown has a trademark. In relation to the shots i think they use every shot to serve a purpose for the trailer. For example the extreme close up of the "monster" will make you jump also a long shot will be able to let you know what the environment is like and straight away you can tell the genre of the film due to the surroundings.
Apollo 18
What elements of the story are revealed
Straight away first scene if of the moon and a crackly radio to me i know this is going to be about something to do with the moon as its the opening scene and must be important. The straight after their is a shot of NASA equipment which certifies the film must be to do with the moon and most likely a trip to the moon. Then you see camera footage of two astronauts which implies there in a rocket as shortly after there is a shot out of a window of the moon. It states they sent to astronauts to the moon on a secret mission so straight away this indicates danger and curiousness on why its a secret mission. Then you see one of the astronauts on the moon taking sample which tells us their there for a reason but obviously something that must be kept secret. Then a weird scene were one of the men films the other man sleeping as he is snoring and claims he never snores he then opens his eyes really quickly. This reveals something strange must be going on. Then a close up of two footprints one being their own and one being someones their not aware of. Then they see a helmet of someones head this starts to show us their not alone and something deadly is on the moon with them. You then see one of the astronauts bleeding so you can tell now something has harmed him but they don't know what. So overall the trailer reveals there is a secret mission to the moon were something is there which they don't know what and is harming the crew members.
What characters appear?
The only characters you see are arstonauts, which appear all the way through the trailer. The "monster" is not shown only spoken about and you only see what it has done to the characters not what it looks like.
What iconic elements of the genre are present?
There is talk on the unknown which is their, they try and scare you by showing footprints of someone else's when they thought they were the only people there. Also they aware you its a private mission so you know if anything goes wrong they cant say anything as it is a secret mission. Also the music is jumpy and dark, not funny and happy music. They don't show you what has done it but shows you a mans cut on his chest which was caused but they don't know how this rises fear of the unknown once again. There are jump scenes as well, its all quickly edited so makes you jump all the way through, they use a deep gloomy voice over to add effect whilst watching the trailer." These footprints they aren't ours" this is were the audience realise there is something there that shouldn't be there and draws the audience in and also keeps there attention. As well as all of that they show a quick shot of a man who was normal at the beginning but that the end looks "possessed" by the "thing". Also towards the end they use screams and the camera changes from a low angle. It looks as if it has been pushed over by the "thing"
Whats costumes and make-up is visible?
The only costumes visible are the astronaut es suits they wear. Make up used is where they show a cut on his chest which seems to be effecting his whole body.
Props
American flag, sampling equipment, satellite dish, astronauts helmet, hammer, picture of one of the astronauts family.
What locations have been used?
There are only two main locations in the trailer on the moon and inside the space shuttle. They evoke the fear of not being safe inside.
Music used in the trailer
At the beginning of the trailer the sound used is of the rocket, aswell as that there is a voice over and what sounds like a heart beat monitor, there is also a voice over of them crew members speaking. One of the crew members then screams which will make the audience jump, this will aware them it is a jumpy film. When there is footage then a line of words, the music builds up tension between each scene. The music still being the same of a sound of a rocket. Towards the end there are more screaches and screams that builds up more tension. At the end the music speeds up as so does the footage and gets louder.
Dialouge
The actors speak all the way through apart from when they build up tension to make you jump there is silence also when taglines appear such as " sent two astonauts on a secret mission to the moon" to build tension but also so you get a rough idea of what the film is actually about. I notice with the dialouge that everything thing that is said is relevant, and helps you to learn more about the film. Without the dialouge you would not be able to understand why its so jumpy why some of the astronauts change and also when they find different footprints why there their.

Behind the shoulder/ medium shot or astronaut on moon on his own after the shots before this it makes the audience worried for his safety.
Medium shot of astronauts shadow on the floor with something behind him. This plays with the audiences mind as its shows the "thing" that is on the moon with them but really quickly so you can tell what or who it is.

Medium shot, through a little window of astronaut on the floors, shows the thing is their and is obviously doing something to him even no we cant see it.
High angle shot of two astronauts talking, one astronaut pointing at the others chest, makes us wonder why hes pointing at his chest, effective as you can see the whole concept.
Close up of strange infected cut on mans rib cage seems to be abnormal effect of this shot being you can tell that something not human has done this.
Over the shoulder shot. Astronaut looking straight at over astronaut, looks possessed something has defiantly happened to him. Personally i think this shot is effective as it is really creepy as the man at the front cant see his friend behind him is like that.
Close up of infected cut on mans stomach. It just shows that who ever or whatever caused the infection is deadly but by showing it, it reminds us the "thing" that did that is near them and may do it to them all.
Medium shot, man with infection grabbing other mans arm, his eyes are red and looks very dangerous. Shows us that who did it to him has some sort of power over him or is in side him.
High angle of man hammering the camera.
Medium shot of astronaut outside what seems to be him testing something. This is effective shot as it makes us think why on earth would you be outside when you have seen what this "thing" is doing to the people your with.
Close up of man outside holding up picture of his family, this shot makes you feel sorry for him and plays on our emotions as you can tell they would not show that picture in a horror film for a good reason its just showing us he is not safe and is wishing for things that aren't going to happen.
Close up or astronauts face smiling.
Close up of "possessed man" with red eyes this shot is scary and shocks you however is intriguing as you want to know why he is like that and what has done it and do his peers know.
Extreme close up of astronaut serious face (no smiles).
Medium shot of man in what looks like excruciating pain.
Worms eye view. Someone holding a hammer. this someone being one of the astronauts this confirms that something has happened to him. You can see another person in front of him so this shot makes you wonder what he is going to do with the hammer.
Medium shot astronaut dead on floor. Shows that even though things started well they get bad.
Long shot of the moon with planet earth in sight. This shot is quite gloomy and scary as you know something is out their.
Last shot is a long shot of the moon just so the audience remember the synopsis of the film.
Editing
Shots were very fast, sometime so fast you couldn't even really see what was going on, unless you paused it every two seconds.
Codes and Conventions
This film is a phsycological film aimed to confront your worst fears and also the fear of the unknown. The trailer doesn't give any hints of any main characters its very vague and doesn't focus on the characters most but the unknown "thing". Also again in this film i believe they use certain camera shots to scare you more. Example at 1:43 there is a very good example of a over the shoulder shot, and by it you can tell there is something wrong with the man he maybe possessed. It helps you to understand what the story line of the film is this. By using the camera shots in different ways it makes you scared but encourages you to watch it so you can find out what the "unknown thing" is.
